Let's go fishing!

Okay, so last week was a crazy week, with school starting back. I had told myself (and anyone else who would listen) that I was going to limit my cakes to one per week, so everyone needed to order early. Well, that didn't happen. I had a cake on the books for Sunday, August 8th for several months. Then, when I went back to work, a couple of friends asked me if I could do cakes for family birthdays. I couldn't say no. SO, last week, I started the school year (if you're a teacher, you know how exhausting that is!) and did three cakes. I wasn't please with how the first one turned out. I didn't use enough gum paste in my fondant, and the bow wouldn't stand up like it was supposed to. :( Then I "went fishing" and made a fish cake for another friend.

Finally, the cake that I had thought about and planned for a couple of months... I made a Tinkerbell Topsy Turvy cake. However, I made the cake "topsy turvier" than I thought, and I thought it was going to fall before the birthday girl even got to see it.

This week, I WILL limit myself to one cake... I have a 3D dinosaur for Saturday, and it will take a lot of the week...

Check back often for updates!

Until next time...

Hapy Birthday, Peyton & Granny!

I decided to go all-out for my grandmother's birthday... after all, you only turn 85 once! So, I decided to go with a topsy-turvy cake. I made 20 gumpaste/fondant daisies and and "85" out of gum paste, as well. So, not only was I making a topsy-turvy, I made gum paste flower for the first time, too! Again... I thought it turned out okay! :)

For Peyton's birthday, we decided to go with flip flops, to
fit into the luau theme of the party.

"Have I shown you my bra?"

Okay... so that's a misleading question... No, I have not started showing my bra to anyone who will look... I did a cake for a lingerie-themed bridal shower. It was a not-so-basic sheet cake - a regular sheet cake with a bra and a pair of panties on it. This was my first experience in working with gum paste, and I loved the results. Let me know if you have a cake that requires some not-so-common items - I'd love the chance to experiment! :)

Until next time...

Back to Work... Catching Up

Where did the summer go?? To my cakes, of course! It seems like we just had graduation, and it's already time to welcome in the next group of students into my classroom! I fell down on updating cakes toward the end of the summer break, so I'm playing catch up now.

I was lucky enough to make some really awesome cakes this summer! I made a pokemon ball cake, which was my first fondant-covered cake. I was very please with how it turned out!

My dad's birthday was July 5th. When you ask him what he wants for his birthday, Christmas, etc., he usually says "A new camper." So... that's what he got this year. Check out his birthday cake!!

I was lucky enou
gh to provide the cake for a baby shower, as well... we used my cupcake tower, with pink and white roses for the cupcakes. For the centerpiece of the table, I made a baby rattle out of cake, as well. Everyone loved the way it turned out...

As you can see, I had a very busy summer... but it was wonderful! I think I'm going to have a hard time this year, trying to manage work and my new job, lol! If you need a cake, give me a call... But call early - I have limited space available, and slots are filling up quickly!

Until next time...

"Caking" is the best job!

I just have to say... cake/cookie decorating is the BEST job. It doesn't even feel like a job...

A Birthday and a Farewell

Last week was filled with cakes and cookies! My aunt (lovingly referred to as "Nanny Chalee-Poo" by my girls and my nephews) celebrated a birthday on Saturday, and I was able to surprise her with a cake! :) I got creative and tried a new spin on a cookie cake...

Then on Sunday, I delivered a
cake for a former student who is leaving this week for boot camp. While we are selfishly sad to see Tina go, we know she will do great while she's away! Check out the pictures of the army cake that I made for her!

We are getting ready to head to Florida to visit Andy's mom at the end of the week. This
week I'll be making a cake and maybe some cookies for the trip. Have a great week and check back often for updates!

Shrek Kicked My Butt!

Okay, so the Shrek head looked more like the "You got gum-gum, dumb-dumb?" character on Night at the Museum... what can I say? It was my first attempt at sculpting a head. In my defense, it was okay until I realized it wasn't tall enough. When I added to the height, it wasn't fat enough any more. When I added to the width, it messed up the eyes, etc. Again, I learned a lot, and you can't win them all! The "Shrektacular" cake, however, turned out GREAT, I thought! :)

This week I'm working on a going away cake for a friend's daughter who will be leaving at the end of the month to go into the army. I'm very proud of Tina, and know she is going to do great! I'll post pictures of her cake early next week.

I'm also working on a *surprise* birthday cake for someone else this weekend. An update on that will be following after the weekend, as well.

Finally, I will be doing a practice run on a flip flop cake that I will make "for real" at the end of July. I plan to donate the practice cake to a local doctor's office as a thank you for all that they do. Picture of the flip flop cake will be posted as soon as they are done. Feel free to offer advice on what you like and what you don't like!

Until next time...

Welcome!

Thanks for taking the time to join me on my journey into the cake and cookie decorating world! This week I'm working on a batch of decorated sugar cookies for a wedding, and a "Shrektacular" birthday cake that will feature Shrek's swamp and house. Stay tuned later in the week for pictures!!
